Sailing the Amazon? Pros and Cons

May 30, 2019

Have you dreamt of sailing the Amazon River, too? It was one of the reasons we changed our plans and sailed to Brazil first. But once we arrived here, the more we talked to people, sailors like locals, the more we did our research, read handbooks and analyzed charts, the more doubts we had. In this interview we summarize our thoughts and explain our decision. Considering all the pros and cons, what would you do?

Passage Briefing - Canary Islands to Cape Verde

December 25, 2018

We had a delay in our departure and a change in our destination. As you will see in the video, strong winds and unfavorable conditions delayed our departure to Tenerife. So instead, we set sail today for Cape Verde. In this video, our captain, Maik, describes the passage plan for the voyage that will cover 970 nautical miles and take us about 8 or 9 days.

Ep. 05 - How to Approach Rabat, Morocco

December 24, 2018

One of the reasons that sailors avoid Morocco on their way to the Canary Islands is the challenging approaches into many of the few marinas Morocco has to offer. Many are located inside rivers on the open, unprotected coast line. At the sand bars that lie outside of the river mouths, the ocean swell is building up and breaking waves may make the entrance into the river impossible. Also the position, depths and shape of the sandbars are changing constantly. In this video we want to guide you step-by-step through the approach into Marina Bouregreg in Rabat, Morocco. And you will see, if you plan it carefully, it will not be a headache at all.

Ep. 04 - How to Approach the Lisbon, Portugal Marina

November 29, 2018

Today we approach together Lisbon, Portugal’s viral capital. Among the many options in Lisbon we picked Marina Parque das Nacoes because it’s the closest to the airport, not even 10 mins by car. However it’s the furthest marina up Rio Tejo, so if you only stay overnight it might not be the best option as it will take you 3 to 4 hours from the entrance of the Rio Tejo. In that case Cascais, Oeiras or one of the plenty other marinas further downstream Rio Tejo might be the better options. Lisbon is a great destination for every sailor headed North from the Canary Islands or the Mediterranean to the Bay of Biscay or for those headed the opposite direction.

Ep. 03 - How to Prepare for a Sailing Departure

September 15, 2018

Before you can set sail you need to get your boat and her crew ready. To not forget anything it makes sense to make yourself a little checklist that you work off every time you want to set sail. This checklist should be adapted to your boat and the intended passage but there are quite some points that you should check every time to leave harbor or anchorage. This little video visualizes of what needs to be done to get boat and crew ready. It is structured in six short sections: 1. Navigation 2. Deck 3. Cabin 4. Cockpit 5. Machinery 6. Crew

Ep. 02 - How to Lock In at The Kiel Canal

August 30, 2018

For many sailors a locking into the Kiel Canal is still stressful. During our last locking into Kiel-Holtenau we have used our on-board camera to record our locking procedure and develop a hopefully helpful guide for sailboat skippers who are not familiar with the Kiel Canal locking procedure.
