As I write this, we are taking a little holiday through Europe with our children. We wanted to spend some quality time with them before we are at sea for 6 to 8 months. However, we did work out a way for some communication during our journey. We purchased a Thuraya Satsleeve Plus satellite phone system that will keep us somewhat connected when we don’t have regular mobile service and for about 1,000 nm from the Canary Islands. This device works like a hot spot. It turns your mobile phone into a satellite phone.
It allows us to send and receive text-email communications with our family and friends. I don’t know if they will miss us, but they will definitely want to know how our Beagle crew, Cap’n Jack and Scout, are doing. We can make calls out, but calls coming in are ridiculously expensive for the sender and the receiver, so we will save that for only serious emergencies. Don’t call us, we’ll call you.
We also invested in a very cool Garmin inReach satellite tracker (https://amzn.to/2ue8BoX) that allows us to send coordinates of our location using the Iridium satellite network. There is no capability to talk to people using this device, but we can send and receive text messages via email addresses.
We celebrated my 51st birthday in Stralsund this weekend but spent most of the time working on the boat. The mechanics were busy, busy, busy, and Seefalke is in much better shape than she looks. Right now, her insides are still all exposed, but I can assure you, this is what progress looks like!
I did a lot of nesting and organizing of our personal supplies and the galley, while Maik continued to find the most efficient places to store all the safety and communication equipment.
I said goodbye to our apartment in Halle, and this was kind of emotional. It really hit me that we won’t see this place again for almost a year. I can’t imagine what the goodbye will be like in Gulf Shores as I spend some time with my dear friends there in the next few weeks. At least we have the communication strategy nailed down. Thanks to modern technology, we never have to be too far away! It's getting REAL, ya'll! Check out our latest YouTube video!
